Tour guide accused of monkey business racket
A tour guide is accused of dipping his paws into the pockets of visitors to a Sichuan Province mountain by charging them "monkey insurance."
A tourist surnamed Liu filed a complaint claiming his tour guide tacked on 15-yuan ($2) to a cable car fee on Mount Emei, a mountain known for its populations of snub-nosed monkeys.
Liu said all 27 in his group were charged the fee before getting off their bus on December 5. "The tour guide collected an extra 15 yuan from each of us, a fee he called 'monkey insurance' for the three monkey areas we would visit," said Liu.
When Liu didn't find the surcharge listed in official park documentation, he demanded his money back.
The guide, surnamed Wang, explained the disputed fee covers cable car and monkey insurance. "We wouldn't cheat people for a few yuan," said Wang.
Officials at the scenic area said there is an official 5-yuan accident insurance, which is voluntary.
The Chengdu travel agency apologized for not saying the correct name and failing to hand out receipts on time.
